***Advance warning – holiday closure 26th July to 16th August

Just a little advanced notice I will be closed from 26th July to take my annual break before the chaos of Christmas begins!

As it’s only me, when I go away things stop :-)

If you’d like anything making for a July or August birthday (or wedding) please try and order as soon as possible to give me enough time to make it for you. I’d really hate to let anyone down, but obviously can’t make last minute orders if I’m not here!!!

To give me enough time to make before I go, please try to order before the 16th July. If it’s possible to squeeze you in after then, I will do my very best :-)

I will return on 16th August, and orders will be despatched as soon as possible after that date, but most likely on the 22nd August.

Again – please order early if you want something!

A little note about where I’m going [in case you're interested!]

For the last three years I have spent my holidays in a rather leaky tent, enjoying the best of British summers in rainy Devon, wet Wales and windy Cornwall. I love the UK, but this year we are doing something a little different.

I’ll still very much be “roughing it” as we are not really the 5-star hotel types! I finally persuaded my lovely husband to let me book my dream [cheap as chips] trip to China.

I don’t speak a word of Mandarin – and am intending to trog around as much of the country as I can with my backpack, a map, list of foods I refuse to eat and treasured dictionary for company!

I’m planning to post some highlights from my trip on here when I return, for anyone who is interested in seeing how sunburned I get :-) !!

Advance warning – price increase 15th May 2011

Buy now to get the best price. Order before the 15th May for delivery any time within the next 3 months, and I’ll hold the price!

It pains me to write this, as I work very hard to keep my prices competitive, but I have to cover the cost of my materials.

Over the last year, the price of raw silver has risen from $13 per ounce in April 2010 to $43 in April 2011. Coupled with an increase in VAT, and postal price increases, the cost of producing my personalised jewellery designs has risen considerably.

I have held my prices as long as possible, buying huge quantities in December before the VAT increase. However, I am now coming to the end of those silver stocks, and will have to increase some of my prices to ensure that my costs are covered.

I am not charging any increase for my time, and will be keeping all costs to a minimum.

Thank you for your understanding – of course if (and hopefully when) the price of silver falls, I will adjust my prices downwards accordingly.

In the meantime, I am planning some new personalised jewellery creations with alternative materials, such as beautiful copper, aluminium and stainless steel. Keep your eyes open for them!

Special note – protect yourself from price increases.

Place an order before the 15th May, for delivery any time before 15th August, and I will honour the current price for you. Just checkout in the usual way, and let me know in the comments box the date you want it to arrive. It’s my way of showing how much I appreciate you.

I love you all, and as always, truly appreciate your support.

xoxo Em.

Something old, something new…

A real heirloom piece of bridesmaids jewellery.

I make a lot of personalised bridal gifts and I love making each one with that little bit of love needed to make it extra special.

But every so often, I get a really unique commission that lets me use my creativity and captures something really unique for the wearer.

This lovely customer inherited a string of pearls from her grandmother, and wanted to incorporate them into her bridesmaids jewellery. Each lucky bridesmaid is a relative, and so will cherish these pearls as a part of their heritage.

I created a special personalised bridesmaid bracelet with freshwater pearls, a few of those very special inherited pearls, a personalised charm and a whole heap of love!

I’m so pleased that her grandmother gets to be a part of her big day – and that each member of the bridal party gets a treasured heirloom.

Comments from my lovely customer

“I am so impressed by what you have created for me – pieces that I have had in my head and you have magically brought to life! ….There is great customer service, and then there is Emma customer service!”

{ I’m not naming names, as the big day isn’t for a while, and I don’t want to spoil any surprises! }

Here’s a sneak peak of one of the personalised bridesmaid jewellery sets I made.

cancer awareness necklace

For the longest time I have wanted to be able to give something back. It’s all too easy to complain when something minor niggles at me, but there are days when I realise just how blessed I am to be able to do what I love, to have a healthy family, and to savour those little pleasures.

The bravest people on earth

Unfortunately not everyone is as lucky, and according to Cancer Research UK, 1 in 3 of us will be affected by cancer in some way at some point in our lives.

That’s a frightening statistic, and one that’s not just a number, but a reality for many people. In fact, this necklace was inspired by one of my favourite customers. Her son is suffering from leukemia, and  bravely undergoing extensive treatment. I’m happy to say that he is currently progressing well with his therapy, and with God’s blessing will make a full recovery.

His mother is one of the sweetest people. Over the last year she has come to me with requests for personalised bracelets for varying members of her family’s birthdays, and always included a little update about how things are going.  Since joining facebook recently, I’ve seen her profile picture change on a regular basis, as she’s always plugging some charity event or other and her energy seems boundless!

I wanted to do a little something nice for her, both as a thank you for being so fabulous – and as a daily reminder that there is hope they will win this battle against cancer. So I created the “Survivor” cancer awareness necklace in honour of her, and her son.

{The version with the orange crystal you see in the images is my little piece of inspiration for her. }

My special charity donation

“Cancer” is a terrifying word, but it doesn’t have to mean a death sentence thanks to the incredible scientists that are pioneering new treatments, and learning about how we can avoid cancer in the future.

For every single “Survivor” necklace sold, I will donate £7 to Cancer Research UK, to help them continue their fight against cancer. Your purchase will not only be a jewel to treasure, but will also help others to win this horrific battle.

Race for life

If you’re taking part this year, why not have your necklace personalised with the words “Race for life” and the date of your run.

Can you think of another way to personalise the necklace? Just let me know – I’ll stamp your awareness necklace with anything you like!

“Cancer sucks”, “I’m a survivor”  ”Cancer won’t beat me” – just a few ideas to get you started :-)

I appreciate that this small donation is just a token towards resolving a huge problem. Why not investigate Cancer Research yourself, and make a direct donation to help further their cause.

Ooh naughty me…

I admit it – my New Years resolution is close to being a failure!

I made a promise I would blog about my new personalised jewellery creations every week, on a Saturday.

And yet, it would seem I have given up already. :-(

Actually I haven’t given up – I’ve just been so busy!

I’ve been working on lots of lovely orders, created about ten new products, and recovered from a truly vile cold. (Admittedly I still have a bit of a cough, but at least I can speak in a semi-normal voice now!)

Must try harder…

I’m determined to get back on track with my blog, and show you some of the new, exciting things I’ve been coming up with, including new versions of my personalised necklaces – and a special”poetry book” I’m creating for a very lucky lady :-)

What New Years resolutions are you struggling to keep now it’s February?

Jingle jangle – personalised bangles

The finished article!

I’ve just added some delicious new jangly birthstone bangles to my range.

Each bangle is handforged using sterling silver wire, and I thought you might like to see the creation process behind the finished product, as well as some shots of my messy workshop!

Whether I’m making a ring or a bangle, the process starts with sawing the right length of gorgeous, shiny silver wire – that always gives me a little shiver of excitement.

The wire is shaped into a semi round shape – not a perfect circle at this point. I file the ends are filed to make sure they meet perfectly. Any gaps equal a messy joint, so I work hard to get them just perfect.

The start of it all

Rounded, and filed

Next they are soldered closed with silver solder. You can see my huge torch next to the tiny piece of silver!

My huge torch!

Yes - that really is a bangle

The heat makes the silver go black and disgusting looking – yes that really is a silver bangle once it’s been soldered!

{are you interested in the science bit about oxidisation due to the chemical reaction heat has with sterling silver?- leave a comment if you are – and I’ll write all about it}

In order to clean the silver, it goes in the slow cooker, with a special pickle for an hour or two.

The pickling bangles

The excess solder is filed off to give you a seamless joint, and then the bangles are shaped on a mandrel into a perfect circle.

Next comes my favourite part – hammering the bangles to give them hundreds of sparkling silver facets. {The noise annoys the neighbours, but is so therapeutic!}

Finally they are tumbled with stainless steel shot and water for a couple of hours, which gives them a sparkling sheen, and strengthens them.

Once they come out of the tumbler they are ready to be adorned with your choice of birthstone crystal or personalised dangles – or worn just as they are for a simply chic finish.

The finished article!

My Jingle Jangle bangles are handmade using sterling silver oval shaped wire, hammered to a sparkle finish and personalised to your requirements. I’d love to make a set just for you! Shop now.

January birthdays…

After the excess of Christmas, and the resulting enforced diet, (at least in my house!) I always feel a little sorry for people whose birthdays are in January.

Surely they are all partied-out, and don’t want an excuse to open presents or eat more cake? No?! Ok, well in that case, maybe a little sparkle for the occasion is in order.

januarybirthstonegifts

January Birthstone – Garnet

The traditional birthstone for January is garnet, although defining what garnet is can be a little tricky. There are around twenty species of natural garnet in it’s mineral form, but only six of them are commonly used in jewellery making.

Garnet properties

Traditional birthstones have special characteristics and properties attributed to them. Garnet in particular is believed to have healing powers, and according to folklore, some ancient warriors wore garnet in battle, as a talisman to improve courage.

Whether you believe in the traditional meanings of birthstone jewellery, or just want a birthstone gift that is personal as well as pretty,  I have a range of Swarovski crystal birthstone jewellery available for lucky ladies born in January.

Natural birthstone jewellery

I am in the process of adding a range of natural gemstone jewellery to my birthstone collection, and have a number of designs rattling around in my head. In fact I ordered some tools just yesterday to help in my stone setting endeavours! For now, though, you can select your birthstone jewellery focuses on the modern, yet beautiful Swarovski equivalent.

If you’d like a custom birthstone gift designed for you, please don’t hesitate to ask!

True dedication…

dedicationbraceletblog

… is wearing your heart on your sleeve!

Every girl (even tomboys like me!) dreams of the perfect wedding, and deserves to feel like a princess on her big day. From the dress that just HAS to be perfect, to the finishing touches like accessories, everything should be carefully considered and just right. If a shop-bought solution just won’t do, then a personalised design may be just the ticket.

Designing a personalised bracelet

My range of personalised bridal jewellery is really popular, because every jewellery design can be personalised to fit your bridal theme – and is handmade with love in the crystal colours of your choice. But my absolute favourite items of bridal jewellery come from customer requests. You guys have great ideas, that can get my creative juices flowing, and result in some beautiful creations!

The newest addition to my range – the Dedication personalised bridal bracelet, was based on a brief from the lovely Kerry. She wanted a combination of pearls, chain and a charm showing the date of the big day. I added in the couple’s initials, a tiny blue pearl as the something blue, and a whole heap of love.

I hope you’ll agree that the bracelet’s pretty special, and a lovely finishing touch for Kerry’s big day.
